How to cancel Netflix
Cancel on netflix.com under Manage your membership: select Cancel, then Finish Cancellation. If that button isn't there, someone else bills you — Apple, or a TV or internet provider — and only they can stop the charge. Either way you keep watching until the end of the period you've already paid for.
First, find out who actually takes the money
Netflix cancellation trips people up for one reason: not every Netflix membership is billed by Netflix. If you signed up on netflix.com, you cancel on netflix.com. If you signed up through Apple, or through a TV or broadband provider, Netflix can't stop that charge — the company that bills you has to.
Open your Netflix Account page and read the Membership section. Netflix's own help page is blunt about what a missing cancel button means: "If you don't see the cancellation option in your account, you'll need to cancel the account with your payment partner."

Cancel on netflix.com
- Go to the Manage your membership page. You may need to sign in first.
- Select Cancel.
- Under Cancel, select Finish Cancellation.
Netflix sends a confirmation email to the address on the account. Don't delete it. If a charge turns up later, that email is the difference between a two-minute support chat and an argument.
Step three is the one people skip. Closing the tab after step two leaves the membership running — you've opened the cancellation, not finished it.
Cancel when Apple bills you
The Membership and Billing section of your Netflix account will tell you if Apple is the biller. If it is, the cancellation happens on your device, not on Netflix's site:
- Open Settings on your iPhone or iPad.
- Tap your name at the top of the screen.
- Tap Subscriptions.
- Tap Netflix, then tap Cancel Subscription — you may have to scroll down to find it.
If there's no Cancel button, or you see an expiry message in red, it's already cancelled. Worth knowing: Apple renews subscriptions automatically and can charge up to 24 hours before the new period starts, so "the day before" is cutting it fine.
Cancel when a TV or internet provider bills you
Netflix has bundled deals with pay-TV and broadband companies, and those memberships are cancelled with the provider. Two things to know before you call them. First, your Netflix billing date can differ from the provider's billing date, so the charge may not disappear on the day you expect. Second, Netflix can't issue refunds on accounts billed through a third party — the money question goes to the provider too.
Check the Membership section on your Account page, or ask your provider directly whether Netflix is riding along on your bill.
When to cancel so you don't pay for another month
Netflix keeps this simple: "If you cancel with time left in your billing period, you can use Netflix until the account cancels automatically at the end of the billing period." Cancelling on day 2 of a cycle costs exactly the same as cancelling on day 29. You keep watching either way, and no new charge lands.
Do the date math once. Find your next billing date on the Account page, then cancel any time before it — there's no penalty for cancelling early and no bonus for waiting. If you want every day you've paid for, aim two or three days ahead of the renewal rather than the morning of: partner-billed memberships and app-store renewals can process earlier than the date printed on your account. One exception to the "keep watching" rule — if there's a hold on your account, it closes immediately when you cancel.
What happens to your profiles and viewing history
Cancelling doesn't erase you. Netflix keeps your viewing activity for 24 months after the account closes, and the same 24-month window covers your recommendations, ratings, account details, gameplay history and game saves. Profiles, watchlists and half-finished episodes are waiting where you left them.
Cancelling is also not the same as deleting. Stopping the billing leaves the account dormant; removing the data is a separate request. If your reason for leaving is privacy rather than money, cancelling alone doesn't finish the job.
Rejoining later
Netflix says you "can restart your Netflix account at any time", and inside that 24-month window you restart into your account rather than a blank one. That makes Netflix a good candidate for seasonal subscribing: on for the month the show you want lands, off again after the finale. The only thing that breaks the habit is forgetting the second half.
The mistakes that cost the most
Deleting the app cancels nothing. Removing Netflix from a phone, a TV or a console leaves the membership — and the charge — exactly where it was.
Removing your card isn't cancelling either. The charge simply fails, the account goes on hold, and you still owe the balance.
And cancelling one is rarely the whole job. Most people who cancel Netflix have four or five other recurring charges they've never written down, and the ones billed through Apple, Google or a phone company are the hardest to spot on a statement.
