How to cancel Spotify Premium
If Spotify bills you, cancel under Manage your plan, then Cancel subscription. When that option isn't there, Apple, Google Play or a partner company is billing you and only they can stop it. Either way Premium runs to your next billing date, then the account drops to free. You keep the playlists and the saved music.
The only question that matters: who charges you?
Spotify Premium is sold through four different tills, and the cancel button only exists in the one that took your money. That is why "I cancelled and I'm still being charged" is one of the most-repeated questions in Spotify's own community.
Open Manage your plan in your Spotify account and look for Cancel subscription. If it is there, Spotify bills you directly and you're two clicks from done. A missing option means somebody else took the money, and Spotify's wording is that the subscription is "associated with a partner company (ex. your mobile or internet provider)". The link to reach them sits in the Payment section.
| Who bills you | Where you cancel |
|---|---|
| Spotify, directly | Spotify account → Manage your plan |
| Google Play | Spotify Android app → Settings and privacy → Account |
| Apple | iPhone Settings → your name → Subscriptions |
| A mobile, broadband or TV partner | The partner, via the link under Payment |
How to cancel Spotify Premium when Spotify bills you
- Go to Manage your plan in your Spotify account.
- Select Cancel subscription.
- Follow it through to the confirmation, and don't stop halfway.
Premium then runs "until your next billing date, then your account switches to free." Spotify doesn't charge you again in the meantime.
Cancel when Google Play bills you
Google collects the payment from anyone who subscribed inside the Android app, though Spotify still hosts the cancel button. Spotify's instructions for Google Play Billing customers:
- Tap your profile picture at the top of the Spotify app.
- Tap Settings and privacy, then Account.
- Scroll to Spotify Free and select Cancel Premium.
- Continue through to the confirmation message.
Anything about the money itself is Google's department, not Spotify's. That covers a refund, a charge on the wrong card and the same charge twice. Uninstalling the app does nothing either, and Google says as much: "when you uninstall the app, your subscription won't cancel." Your other Google Play subscriptions sit in the same account, and the steps to cancel subscriptions on Google Play start there.
Cancel Spotify Premium on iPhone when Apple bills you
Apple is the merchant on any subscription bought inside an iPhone app, so Spotify's website cannot stop the charge. Spotify's own answer is to send you to Apple's steps:
- Open Settings on your iPhone or iPad.
- Tap your name, then tap Subscriptions.
- Tap Spotify, then tap Cancel Subscription. Scroll down if you don't see it.
No Cancel button, or an expiry date shown in red? It's already cancelled.
Cancel when a phone company or bundle bills you
Spotify packages Premium with mobile plans, broadband deals and hardware promotions in a lot of markets, and only the partner can end those. In your Spotify account, open Manage your plan and check Payment, where the partner's contact link sits. Expect the bundle's notice period rather than Spotify's. Telecoms contracts rarely stop on the day you ask.
Trials end on a different rule. Cancel a paid month and Premium runs to your next billing date. Cancelling "during a zero-priced free trial period" switches the account to free immediately. So if you've decided against a trial, cancelling today costs you the days you have left. Wait until the trial is nearly over, and don't leave it to the last hour. We worked the timing out in a separate guide on whether to cancel right after signup.
Cancelling Premium doesn't delete anything
Some people stay on Premium because they think cancelling wipes the library. It doesn't. Cancelling is a downgrade, and Spotify's own line is "You keep your playlists and saved music when your account is free. You can also still log in and play with ads." Your follows and your listening history stay too. Deleting the account is a separate job you have to go looking for.
Duo and Family: owner or member?
Two people can press cancel on the same Spotify Family plan and get different results.
- If you're the plan manager and paying for it, cancelling ends the plan for everyone. Spotify notes that "if you cancel a family plan, any managed accounts will move to our free, ad-supported plan." Everyone on it loses Premium on the same date you do, so tell them first.
- Cancel as a member and the steps "remove your account from the plan, but won't cancel it." The plan carries on billing the manager, and only the manager can stop that. Leaving is all you can do.
The payment method is the manager's job too, and members can't touch it. When you're splitting a Duo or Family plan with friends, write down who the manager is while you still remember. It saves an awkward group chat eleven months from now.
Still charged after you cancelled?
Nine times out of ten you cancelled in the wrong place. Either you pressed cancel inside Spotify while Apple was the biller, or you took yourself off a Family plan and assumed that ended it. Look at the charge itself. An "APPLE.COM/BILL" line or a Google entry on your statement means the app store owns that subscription, and only the app store can close it. Netflix is split across billers the same way, and our guide on how to cancel Netflix works out which one is yours. Cancel in the right place and keep the confirmation email. Then write the biller down next to the subscription, so you know who bills what before the next renewal.
Four billers, one list
Spotify Premium can be billed by any of four companies, and the rest of your list is spread across the same ones. Add them to Subby with the price, the cycle and the company that charges them, and each renewal gets a reminder first. 600+ brands ready to add in a tap. Free to use, with ads.
